Default Won Bin News

It’s not unheard of for movie stars to visit other film sets in support of friends, but the unannounced arrival of Won Bin on the set of the new film Le Grand Chef 2: Kimchi Battle came as a surprise, particularly since Won Bin is known for lying low and not doing a making a lot of appearances.

Kimchi Battle is the sequel to the popular original film starring Kim Kang-woo (which was based on the same manhwa that was adapted into the drama Gourmet with Kim Rae-won). It stars Kim Jung-eun and Jin Gu, the latter with whom Won Bin acted in his recent film Mother. He’d also once shared the same management with another cast member, Wang Ji-hye, and had worked on the movie Taegukgi (which solidified his status as a top star) with Kimchi Battle’s producer Lee Sung-hoon.

According to one source, the visit was completely unplanned and Won Bin came bearing snacks for the staff and greeted the director and actors individually. He is currently taking a break after finishing promotional activities for Mother, and is considering his next project.

Default Won Bin is an ajusshi for his next film role

With his successful comeback film (the thriller Mother) still fresh in our minds, the actor has announced his next project: a movie called Ajusshi [아.저.씨], which is the term adult men start being called as they hit their thirties and beyond (although the typical connotation of an ajusshi tends to be the conventional middle-aged man).

He plays a “lonely man who lives as though he’s cut off from the world,” having willingly rejected society. As he meets with a unique woman who opens his heart, the character promises to show a “deep, internal” style to Won Bin’s acting. His co-star has not yet been cast.

Won Bin is still promoting Mother abroad, and will travel to Japan mid-month in time for its premiere there. Ajusshi will enter filming at the end of this year and will aim for a summer 2010 release.

Won Bin hops onto summer action film

Korean actor Won Bin has decided to take on action as his second choice of genre since making a comeback to the big screen earlier this year with film "Mother", according to a press release on Tuesday.

The film, tentatively titled "Ah-jjeo-sshii", is about a lonely, reclusive man and his relationship with the only girl who opened up to him. Won will play the lead character, producer Opus Pictures said in the statement.

The movie directed by Lee Jeong-beom of "Cruel Winter Blues will go into shoot at the end of the year and be released next summer.

The 31-year-old actor debuted in 1997 with TV series "Propose" with his breakthrough role coming three years later in KBS drama "Autumn Fairy Tale", in which he co-starred with two other Hallyu stars Song Seung-hun and Song Hye-kyo.

He made his movie debut in "Guns & Talks" in 2001 and has not returned to television since. He last appeared in director Bong Joon-ho's critically acclaimed film "Mother" this year, the first film he took on since completing South Korea's mandatory military service.

Won Bin shows tough side in new film

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff reporter

Won Bin has cast off his pretty boy image to show off his knack for high kicks and dagger-swinging skirmishes in ``The Man from Nowhere.''

It's yet another testosterone-packed film by ``Cruel Winter Blues'' director Lee Jeong-beom, and made headlines for casting the heartthrob, who is better known for melodramatic roles that jab at women's maternal instincts.

``The media has mostly portrayed (Won) Bin's sensitive side and I thought his conventional image would work well in depicting the bond with a child. But Bin is very stoic and scary in the action sequences, and I think these two contrasting sides complement each other in the movie,'' the director told reporters in a Seoul theater, Thursday.

Won stars as Tae-sik, a former secret agent who, after losing his wife in a tragic incident, leads a reclusive life running a pawnshop. He begins to open up his heart however as he spends time with So-mi, a child who lives next door. But one day he is forced to face the world again when So-mi is kidnapped by a crime ring.

``I actually have no idea what kind of man he is,'' Won said, chuckling, about his mysterious character. ``He has a painful past but breaks out of this shell he had built around him in order to save a child. It's an action drama, but I was intrigued by how a man could risk his life for someone who isn't even family. I tried my best to deliver the desperation and urgency my character felt.''

So-mi is played by Lee Sae-ron, who appeared in the internationally acclaimed Korean-French co-production ``A Brand New Life.'' The actress, who turns 10 at the end of the month, drew laughter as she addressed Won as ``ajeossi'' (uncle) ― the film's original title in Korean ― and shyly said that she had no idea who Won was before shooting the film.

The 32-year-old Won, who is better known as the sweet younger brother in ``Tae Guk Gi'' or helpless son in ``Mother,'' said he preferred that the ajeosi image remain limited to the movie.

As this man-meets-child story garnered interest among netizens, parallels were drawn to films such as ``Leon'' or ``Man on Fire.'' Regarding the comparison, the director said, ``I wasn't offended at all; it's actually an honor. But my film also stands on its own since it is rooted in Korean values and features rather unconventional action sequences.''

Film clips showed Won engaged in dangerous action sequences, and in one fighting scene the camera was attached to his opponent to heighten the realism. Won said he trained for three months with a martial arts director and did many of the stunts himself.

``It felt like dying, doing wire action for the first time. But the dagger sequences were particularly dangerous since you could easily cut your eyes or face, and it's all about coordination,'' said Won. ``I think Bin was driven by a certain urgency or energy he already possessed. He's also very athletic, strong-willed and passionate, and I thank him for pulling off the difficult scenes,'' said the director.

Won Bin: ‘I Dreamed of Becoming Actor After Watching Action Movie’

The movie “The Man From Nowhere,” which will be released on August 4, is a very violent movie with realistic action scenes. The fight scene in which Tae Sik, who is the former member of a special forces unit, devastates a criminal organization that kidnapped a neighbor girl contains violent scenes such as splattered blood and broken bones, but the scene is also filled with resolute and well-made action sequences.

An interviewer met actor Won Bin, who has been "reborn" as an action hero, at a café located in Samcheong-dong, Jongno on August 2. He had previously filmed battle scenes in the movie “Taegukgi“ and he had carried a gun when he filmed the movie “Guns and Talks,” but he mentioned that this is the first time for him to film a legitimate action movie.

He said, “When I was a high school student, I completely indulged in action movies. When I watched the movie ‘Terrorist,’ I came to have a dream of becoming an actor. I just had the vague thought of thinking ‘It looks cool. I wish that I could film that kind of movie.’ But, it took about fourteen years for me since my debut to realize my dream of filming an action movie."

Won Bin has clean-cut features not readily associated with the word ‘Mister,’ which is the Korean title of the movie. Director Lee Jeong Bum had reportedly kept in mind an image of a middle-aged man character for the role. Won Bin related his thoughts about this image, saying, “When I first read the script of the film, I wanted to play the character, and I thought that it might be more interesting if a male actor who does not look like a middle-aged man performs the role.” Won Bin does not have the image of a tough man, such as actor Choi Min Soo, who played the protagonist in the movie “Terrorist,” which had given the dream of becoming an actor to Won Bin, but he successfully portrayed the character who has a deep scars inside and effectively expressed the anger of the character emotionally.

He informed the interviewer that he had talked with the director many times about the character and he had actually focused on portraying the character’s emotion through action. He explained, “Tae Sik’s depressed feelings were expressed in the form of action. Action is actually Tae Sik’s language in this movie.”

He continued, “Filming the action scenes was very exciting. Also, when I filmed some action scenes not typical of Korean action movies, I was even more amazed. I had to perform the movements that come naturally when a special agent is faced with the enemy and prepares for counterattack, so I had to be equipped with the basic movements. I trained to use a gun and sword and to perform action steps three months before filming began. Practicing the steps was very tricky. My upper body and lower body have to move together, but actually they move in different directions.”

He presented the fast and disciplined action which is a mixture of traditional Asian martial arts such as Penjak Silat, Kali, and Arnis. Which scene did he feel was the most dangerous for him? He picked the scene in which he is thrown off a building and falls onto the net of a driving range. He said, “I was hanging from the height of a five-story building, relying on only a single rope. In the scene, I had to fall down while feigning unconsciousness, so I was really dizzy when I filmed the scene.”

The movie “The Man From Nowhere“ is the first movie in which Won Bin plays the sole protagonist. When he filmed the movie “Taegukgi,“ actor Jang Dong Gun acted as another protagonist together with him; when he filmed the movie “Mother,” he played the male lead alongside actress Kim Hye Ja, and when he filmed the movie “My Brother,” actor Shin Ha Kyun was the main actor along with Won Bin. This time, Won Bin has to solve every problem in this movie as the sole protagonist. But, he does not attach great importance to that fact. He said, “I just approached this movie as an actor. Some people say that I am the single protagonist of this movie, but I tried not to put so much importance on the fact because thinking that way could disturb my acting by giving me pressure. In fact, I did not have enough time to think about those things because the filming schedule was so tight. At this moment, while I wait for the release of the movie in the midst of many people’s excited anticipation, I am feeling a little bit of pressure.”

From his first movie “Guns and Talks” in 2001, which was directed by director Jang Jin, to this latest movie “The Man From Nowhere,” he has filmed five movies. Even taking into account the break from the time when he entered the army until his discharge due to family problems, the number of works in which he has appeared is not very high. He explained, “I could not find works that I really wanted to appear in. When I filmed the movies such as “Taegukgi” and “Mother,” it took a long time for filming. I want to act consistently and slowly for a long time, rather than appearing in many different works.”

What does Won Bin usually do when he does not work? He answered, "Most of the time, I stay at home. I watch movies and read books. I usually do not meet people very often or drink alcohol with people. Sometimes, night and day become switched for me, and during those times, I do not sleep at night and watch movies until the early morning, and go to bed afterward. I have been quite busy, so I have not been able to go to the cinema since the movie ‘The Servant.’”
